Forensic Science and Pathology Bureau

The bureau is a nationally accredited forensic laboratory system serving all state and local law enforcement agencies, medical examiners and prosecuting attorneys in Oregon. It performs forensic analysis on criminal cases for the defense upon a court order. Analysts provide technical assistance and training, evaluate and analyze evidence, interpret results and provide expert testimony related to the full spectrum of physical evidence recovered from crime scenes.

State Medical Examiners Office

The office provides direction and support to the state death investigation program. The medical examiner manages all aspects of the state medical examiner program and has responsibility for technical supervision of county offices in each of Oregon’s 36 counties.

Gaming Enforcement Division

The division consists of the Lottery Gaming Section and Tribal Gaming Section. Both work to ensure all gaming activities are conducted with fairness, integrity, honesty and security.

Criminal Investigation Division

The division is the statewide investigative resource for the Department of State Police. The division’s Major Crimes Section, Drug Enforcement Section and Sex Offender Registration Unit work in conjunction with other state police divisions.

Detectives are located across the state to support local law enforcement with major criminal investigations and to serve on interagency teams. They also provide primary criminal investigative services on state property and at state institutions.

Fish and Wildlife Division

The division enforces laws and regulations related to Oregon’s fish and wildlife resources and the habitats upon which they depend. Other services include public safety and enforcement of criminal and traffic laws.

Patrol Services Division

The division provides a uniform presence and law enforcement services throughout the state. They are primarily responsible for crash and crime reduction and other transportation safety issues. They also respond to emergency calls-for-service on Oregon’s state and interstate highways.

This bureau is responsible for Northern and Southern Command Centers, Bureau Operations – Technology and Computer Services, Central Records Section, Criminal Justice Information Services, Sex Offender Registration and School Safety Tip Line.

The systems provide information-sharing services for security background checks and for assisting law enforcement and criminal justice agencies in their investigations. The unit also includes the Oregon State Athletic Commission charged with protecting the public and participants involved in ring sports.
