Present Duties
The Goulet Building in Salem houses the Board of Optometry office. (Oregon State Archives Scenic Images collection) The board works to protect Oregonians from the dangers of unqualified and improper practice of optometry. There are five governor-appointed members: four are licensed optometrists and one is a public member. Members serve three-year terms and oversee the agency and its functions. The board is assisted by two full-time staff who help board members enforce the agency’s laws and rules. There are currently about 1,200 active and inactive licensed optometrists in Oregon. Oregonians can submit online complaints to the board for review if they believe an optometrist has breached Oregon law or given an improper standard of care. The board does not handle fee disputes.
