The board was established by the 1927 Legislature to protect consumers of naturopathic medicine by enforcing practice standards. The profession has grown from 200 in 1998 to over 1,100 in 2018. The board is staffed with three full-time equivalent positions to support the seven-member board that includes two public members and five licensed naturopathic physicians. The board carries out the provisions of its authority by conducting background checks; examining, issuing and renewing licenses; approving educational opportunities for licensees; investigating complaints; and taking action when discipline is appropriate.
