Duties and Responsibilities: This program area provides inspections for all of Oregon’s food distribution systems (except restaurants) to ensure food is safe for consumption. To protect and maintain animal health, it ensures animal feeds meet nutritional and labeling standards. Through registration of brands and brand inspections, it denies a market in stolen livestock.

Duties and Responsibilities: These programs provide consumer protection and fair competition among businesses while facilitating interstate commerce and international trade by ensuring the accuracy and uniformity of Oregon’s Commercial Weighing System and the quality of motor fuels sold in Oregon. The program area provides laboratory analysis and technical support to the Oregon Department of Agriculture’s enforcement programs and also administers programs dealing with wolf depredation compensation and egg-laying hen cage space.

Duties and Responsibilities: These programs help Oregon’s agricultural producers successfully add value to, sell and ship products to local, national and international markets by promoting and creating demand for products through marketing activities, inspection and certification.

Duties and Responsibilities: These programs address water quality, quantity and natural resource conservation on agricultural lands. They also address the proper use of pesticides, labeling and sale of fertilizer, as well as field burning in the Willamette Valley. Program goals are accomplished through outreach, regulatory work, monitoring and coordination with other natural resource agencies.

Duties and Responsibilities: These programs protect Oregon’s agricultural industries and natural environment from harmful plant pests, diseases and noxious weeds; enhance the value and marketability of exported nursery stock, Christmas trees, seeds and other agricultural products; register industrial hemp growers and handlers; and further the conservation of threatened and endangered plants.

Duties and Responsibilities: The 10-member State Board of Agriculture advises ODA on policy, develops recommendations on key agricultural issues and provides advocacy of the state’s agriculture industry.
Agricultural Commodity Commissions
Commodity commissions conduct promotional, educational, production and market research projects. The commissions are authorized by ORS chapters 576, 577 and 578 and are funded by assessments on the producers of the commodities. The director of the Oregon Department of Agriculture appoints the members of all 23 commissions.
