Present Duties
The agency is responsible for titling and registering motorboats, registering outfitter/guides, licensing charter boat operators, co-managing aquatic invasive species inspection stations with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife throughout the state and selling Waterway Access Permits for non-motorized boats 10 feet long and longer.
The five-member volunteer board adopts boating regulations to promote safety, reduce conflict, preserve traditional boat uses and protect the environment. The agency has 42.5 staff and five seasonal boating safety advocates working in four primary program areas: Boating Safety, Policy and Environmental, Titling and Registration and Boating Facilities.
The revenue generated helps fund the agency and contracts with county sheriff's offices and the Oregon State Police for statewide marine patrol services. Funding provides boating facility grants and engineering services to eligible applicants to develop and maintain boat ramps, parking, restrooms and temporary moorage facilities. Funding also supports environmental and educational programs to promote stewardship and boating safety.
