Present Duties
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) is responsible for sustainably managing fish and wildlife in Oregon. Through its commission, ODFW sets regulations for recreational and commercial fishing, crabbing, clamming and hunting. It also manages species that are not hunted or fished, including state-listed endangered, threatened and sensitive species. ODFW operates more than 30 fish hatcheries raising trout, salmon and steelhead to supplement natural stocks and provide fishing opportunities. It also manages more than 20 wildlife areas providing habitat for fish and wildlife and hunting; fishing; viewing and other outdoor activities. The Oregon State Police play a key role in achieving ODFW’s mission through enforcement of fish and wildlife regulations.
ODFW consists of the commission, a commission-appointed director and a statewide staff of approximately 1,000 permanent employees including field staff spread among offices throughout the state.
