Board of Accountancy

Present Duties

The board regulates approximately 8,500 Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) and Public Accountants (PAs), as well as approximately 900 public accounting firms. Applicants for licensure must meet minimum standards in terms of education, work experience and successful completion of the national CPA exam. Thereafter, licensees must renew their license by demonstrating professional accounting competency every two years through 80 hours of education for active licensees.

The board holds licensees accountable for adhering to all professional and ethical standards that apply to their practice. Complaints can be submitted to the board from members of the public, other sources or may be self-initiated by the board. A complaint form can be found on the board’s website. If an investigation finds a violation of board statutes or rules, licensees are held accountable for their conduct through disciplinary action. The public can verify the status and disciplinary history of an Oregon licensee or public accounting firm on the board’s website or at cpaverify.org. Seven staff members support the board.
