Duties and Responsibilities: The office was established in 1967, a year after the U.S. Congress passed the National Historic Preservation Act. Under federal and state mandates, the office manages programs that create opportunities for individuals, organizations and local governments to become directly involved in the protection of significant historic and cultural resources.

The office creates these opportunities through archaeological services, grant programs, planning assistance, tax incentive programs and federal programs such as the National Register of Historic Places. In addition, the Certified Local Government Program and the Oregon Main Street Network collaborate with communities to develop comprehensive revitalization strategies based on a community’s unique assets, character and heritage.

The OPRD director is Oregon’s designated State Historic Preservation Officer.

State Advisory Committee on Historic Preservation

Duties and Responsibilities: The committee is a nine-member group that reviews nominations to the National Register of Historic Places. The members are professionally recognized in the fields of history, architecture, archaeology and other related disciplines. The committee holds public meetings in February, June and October each year at different locations within the state.

Duties and Responsibilities: The commission, established to secure, sustain, enhance and promote Oregon’s heritage, is a nine-member, governor-appointed commission that has broad responsibilities as a connector and catalyst for hundreds of organizations and thousands of Oregonians devoted to preserving and interpreting Oregon’s heritage resources. Its programs include the Heritage and Museum Grant Programs, technical assistance for heritage organizations and an annual conference. It also gives annual Heritage Excellence Awards and designates Oregon Heritage Traditions, All-Star Communities and Statewide Celebrations.

Commission on Historic Cemeteries

Duties and Responsibilities: Established in 1999, the commission maintains a list of historic cemeteries and grave sites in Oregon. It works to promote public education on the significance of historic cemeteries and to provide financial and technical assistance for restoring, improving and maintaining their appearance.

Duties and Responsibilities: Established in 2017, the office was created to elevate the success of outdoor recreation in every corner of the state. Working at the policy level, the division within the OPRD will pull support from public, nonprofit and commercial organizations to protect and expand access, promote participation and protect the natural resources upon which outdoor recreation depends. Through policy coordination, research and reporting and development of common strategies across the public and private sectors, the office will work to ensure outdoor recreation delivers personal, community and economic benefits in perpetuity.
