The board protects Oregonians seeking mental health counseling and marriage and family therapy services. They determine if individuals meet initial and continuing education, training and examination standards for licensure and issues new and renewal licenses to those who are qualified. The board also develops policies and standards for professional practice and enforces disciplinary action against counselors, therapists and interns who engage in misconduct or are incompetent. It issues civil penalties to individuals practicing in Oregon without a license or engaging in misrepresentation. The eight members of the board are appointed by the governor and confirmed by the Senate for three-year terms. Board members may be appointed for up to two terms.

They  develop policies and standards for professional practice and enforces disciplinary action against psychologists, psychologist associates and residents who engage in misconduct or are incompetent. It also issues civil penalties to individuals practicing in Oregon without a license or engaging in misrepresentation. The nine members of the board are appointed by the governor and confirmed by the Senate for three-year terms. Board members may be appointed for up to two terms.​
