Playing for the New York Yankees, Hillsboro native Scott Brosius was an American League All Star in 1998, a Gold Glove winner in 1999, & part of 3 World Series championship teams. He was 1998 World Series Most Valuable Player, hitting for a .471 average.

Coos Bay native Mel Counts starred as center on the Oregon State University basketball team before winning Olympic gold with the U.S. team in 1964. His distinguished NBA career included playing 5 championship series, 2 on winning Boston teams.

The 1st mascot for Oregon State University (then State Agricultural College) was Jimmie the Coyote in 1893. The animal was owned by a local football fan. After subsequent mascots including a bulldog & a human, the current mascot is Benny the Beaver.

Basketball Hall of Famer Clyde "The Glide" Drexler played for the Portland Trailblazers for nearly 12 seasons. Known for his soaring drives to the basket, he was 1 of only 3 NBA players to top 20,000 points, 6,000 rebounds & 3,000 assists.

Oregon State University track & field star Dick Fosbury revolutionized the high jump with his "Fosbury Flop" in which he would leap head first & back downward to the bar. The technique won him a 1968 Olympic gold medal & became the standard for the sport.

University of Oregon football quarterback Dan Fouts played for the Ducks & San Diego in the NFL. The Hall of Famer was the 1st NFL quarterback to throw over 4,000 yards in back to back seasons & the 3rd to total more than 40,000 yards in a career.

Salem native A.C. Gilbert won the gold medal in the pole vault in the 1908 Olympics. He then went on to earn a medical degree, perform magic tricks, win over 150 patents, invent toy erector sets, & found a big toy manufacturing business.

Corvallis native Bob Gilder found success on the PGA golf tour at a young age, winning 6 tournaments between 1976 & 1983. Eligible to play on the Champions Tour in 2000, he won 2 tournaments & was named Rookie of the Year in 2001.

Ancer Haggerty was a high school football & wrestling champion in Portland before anchoring the University of Oregon defensive line in the 1960s. He was the 1st African American U.S. District Judge for Oregon in 1994 & chief judge in 2002.

The legendary "Tall Firs" University of Oregon basketball team won the first-ever NCAA tournament in 1939 behind the "fast-break" innovating Hall of Fame coach Hobby Hobson (above) and 3 All-America players.

Medford native Marshall Holman was the youngest bowler to win the Firestone Tournament of Champions at age 21 in 1976. He won 22 titles & earned a spot in the Professional Bowlers Association Hall of Fame.

Portland native Peter Jacobsen was among the elite of the golf world for decades. His seven PGA Tour wins spanned 23 years & included a win at age 49, making him one of the oldest to win on the tour.

Hall of Fame slugger Harmon Killebrew accepted a football scholarship to the University of Oregon, but went directly to major league baseball instead. His 573 home runs over 22 years ranks him high on the all-time home run list.

Phil Knight changed the sports footware & apparel world when he teamed with his former coach, Bill Bowerman, in 1964 to form Nike. Using innovative designs & star-driven marketing, he helped the Beaverton company grow to the largest of its kind.

Portland native Mickey Lolich helped create Detroit's magical 1968 championship baseball season. He won 3 complete games in that World Series. Originally right-handed, a childhood tricycle accident led him to pitch left-handed.

Salem native Larry Mahan became one of the greats of professional rodeo and one of the sport's first mainstream stars in the 1960s. Trendsetting and media savvy, Mahan won a record 6 all-around championships and competed in 1,200 rodeos.

Crusty Hall of Fame basketball coach Ralph Miller led the Oregon State University team to 4 conference championships & 8 NCAA Tournament appearances in 19 years. His 657 career victories rank him near the top all-time for college coaches.

Competing in over 600 races, Portland's Monte Shelton proved one of the best race car drivers in Oregon history. He won the Six Hours at Watkins Glen twice and he took the Portland Rose Cup 6 times while finishing 2nd 7 times.

The underdog 2006 Oregon State University baseball team became the 1st team in College World Series history to lose twice in the series and still win the national title.

George Pasero covered Oregon sports as a reporter & columnist for over 50 years. His skill & fairness while working for the Oregon Journal & other papers made him beloved by generations of athletes and sports fans & led to numerous honors.

Oregon track legend Steve Prefontaine was the 1st athlete to win 4 consecutive NCAA titles in the same event, the 5,000 meters. By the time of his death in a 1975 car crash, he held the American record in every event from 2,000 to 10,000 meters.

Track star Mel Renfro also starred in football at the University of Oregon, playing both offense & defense. His Hall of Fame NFL career includes 10 Pro Bowl invitations & 4 Super Bowl games. A defensive back, he also returned punts & kickoffs.

Ken Kesey & Ken Babbs wrote the book "Last Go Round" about the 1911 Pendleton Roundup in which 3 cowboys (a black man, a Nez Perce Indian and a white boy) competed for the first world broncbusting crown. The "Old West" spirit is revealed in the telling.

Lake Oswego swimming phenomenon Don Schollander won 4 gold medals at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics & landed the cover of Life magazine. He won another gold & a silver medal in the 1968 Olympics before entering the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame.

During the 1984 games, Oregonian Bill Johnson became the 1st American skier to win an Olympic downhill medal (gold). Attempting a comeback in 2001, Johnson lost control & crashed through a fence. He nearly died and was left with brain injuries.

Scandinavian lumber workers helped pioneer central Oregon winter sports in 1928 by forming the Bend Skyliners mountaineering club. Later, Bill Healy, a World War II veteran ski-trooper, began developing a ski area on Bachelor Butte in the 1950s.

Track runner Mary Slaney of Eugene, favored to win gold in the 1984 Olympics, collided with runner Zola Budd in a controversy watched by the world. Slaney fell injured to the curb and lost a medal. Slaney's successes included several world records.

University of Portland soccer stars Tiffany Milbrett (left) & Shannon MacMillan (right) earned numerous collegiate honors. Both won gold medals with the USA Olympic team in 1996 & silver medals in 2000.

Basketball star Katy Steding won both All-American & Academic All-American honors at Lake Oswego High School before leading Stanford to the national title in 1990. A four-time Pac-10 all-star, she played on the 1996 gold medal USA Olympic basketball team.

Robert Robinson (left) & Charles Williams (right) were the University of Oregon's first African American athletes in 1926. They were forced to skip the last game of their careers against the University of Florida which refused to play against blacks.

Basketball center Bill Walton made his mark by leading the Portland Trailblazers to the NBA championship in 1977. The colorful Grateful Dead follower could do it all: score, defend, rebound, block shots, and pass. He later became a TV sports commentator.

In Hawaii for the 1941 Shrine Bowl, the Willamette University football team was stranded by the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. They helped stringing barbed wire along Waikiki Beach & toting rifles before getting a ride to the mainland weeks later.
