The Historic Columbia River Highway clings to a hillside near the river just east of Mosier. The more efficient and less evocative Interstate 84 is just below. To the west of Mosier, a five-mile stretch of the highway is closed to motorized traffic. To the east, the highway climbs to Rowena Crest and then drops again to The Dalles. (
